Key Takeaways:

Adding a hot tub heater to your above ground pool can provide the luxury and relaxation of warm water.

Consider the size of your pool and energy efficiency when choosing the best hot tub heater.

Maintenance and repair are important for ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of your hot tub heater.

Seek professional hot tub heater repair services when necessary to preserve your investment.

Types of hot tub heaters for above ground pools

When it comes to choosing a hot tub heater for your above ground pool, there are a few options to consider. Two popular choices are electric hot tub heaters and gas hot tub heaters. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so let's dive in and explore the pros and cons of each.

Electric Hot Tub Heaters

Electric hot tub heaters are a common choice for many pool owners. They are easy to install and operate, making them a convenient option. These heaters use electricity to generate heat and warm the water in your hot tub.

Pros:

Energy efficient: Electric hot tub heaters are known for their energy efficiency, making them a cost-effective choice in the long run.

No emissions: Unlike gas heaters, electric heaters do not produce any emissions, making them a cleaner option for the environment.

Quiet operation: Electric heaters tend to operate quietly, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing soak in your hot tub.

Cons:

Slower heating: Electric heaters may take longer to heat up your hot tub compared to gas heaters. However, advancements in technology have improved their heating efficiency.

Potential high energy consumption: Although electric heaters can be energy efficient, if not used properly, they may lead to higher energy consumption and costs.

Gas Hot Tub Heaters

Gas hot tub heaters, powered by either natural gas or propane, are another popular choice for heating above ground pools. Let's explore the pros and cons of this type of heater.

Pros:

Rapid heating: Gas heaters are known for their quick heating capabilities, allowing you to enjoy warm water in your hot tub almost instantly.

Effective in cold climates: Gas heaters perform well in colder climates, where electric heaters may struggle to maintain the desired water temperature.

Lower upfront costs: Gas heaters generally have a lower initial cost compared to electric heaters, making them an appealing option for budget-conscious pool owners.

Cons:

Higher operating costs: Gas heaters tend to have higher operating costs compared to electric heaters, as you'll need to replenish the natural gas or propane supply regularly.

Emissions: Gas heaters produce emissions during operation, which may not be ideal for those concerned about the environmental impact.

Potential noise: Gas heaters can be noisier than electric heaters, which may affect the tranquil atmosphere of your hot tub experience.

Ultimately, the choice between an electric hot tub heater and a gas hot tub heater depends on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Consider factors such as energy efficiency, convenience, heating speed, and environmental impact when making your decision.

Next, in Section 3, we'll guide you through selecting the best hot tub heater for your above ground pool. But before that, let's get some expert advice. Take a look at the image below, showcasing the different types of hot tub heaters available.

Choosing the best hot tub heater for your above ground pool

When it comes to selecting a hot tub heater for your above ground pool, several factors need to be considered. By taking into account the size of your pool, energy efficiency, and whether you need a replacement or a new installation, you can make the best choice for your specific requirements.

1. Determine the Size

The first step in choosing a hot tub heater is determining the size of your above ground pool. A heater that is too small may struggle to maintain the desired temperature, while an oversized heater will consume unnecessary energy. Refer to your pool's dimensions and consult with the manufacturer to ensure you select a heater that fits your pool's size perfectly.

2. Energy Efficiency

Investing in an energy-efficient hot tub heater not only benefits the environment but also saves you money on utility bills. Look for heaters with high energy efficiency ratings, such as those with Energy Star certification. These heaters are designed to deliver optimal performance while minimizing energy consumption.

3. Replacement or New Installation

If you already have an existing hot tub heater that needs to be replaced, consider the compatibility with your current system. Ensure that the new heater is compatible with the electrical or gas connections in your pool setup. On the other hand, if you are installing a hot tub heater for the first time, consult a professional to ensure proper installation and compatibility with your pool's infrastructure.

4. Outdoor and Portable Options

If you plan to use your hot tub outdoors, look for heaters explicitly designed for outdoor usage. These models are built to withstand various weather conditions, ensuring their durability and longevity. Additionally, portable hot tub heaters offer flexibility and convenience, allowing you to easily move and position the heater wherever it is needed.

5. Research and Compare

Before making a final decision, research different hot tub heater brands and models. Read customer reviews and compare specifications, considering factors such as warranty, customer support, and ease of use. By doing thorough research and comparing options, you can make an informed choice and select the best hot tub heater that meets your needs.

By considering the size of your pool, energy efficiency, and whether you need a replacement or a new installation, you can choose the best hot tub heater for your above ground pool. Remember to research and compare different options to ensure you find the perfect fit. Whether you opt for an outdoor hot tub heater, a portable hot tub heater, or simply the best overall, make an informed decision to enhance your above ground pool experience.

Hot tub heater maintenance and repair tips

Keeping your hot tub heater in optimal condition is essential for enjoying soothing and relaxing moments in your spa. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prolong the lifespan of your hot tub heater, ensuring it operates efficiently year after year.

One common issue hot tub owners may encounter is inadequate heating. If you notice that your hot tub is not heating up sufficiently, it could be due to a malfunctioning thermostat or a faulty heating element. In such cases, it is recommended to consult the user manual or reach out to the manufacturer for troubleshooting instructions. Remember to always follow safety precautions and turn off the power before attempting any repairs.

In addition to addressing heating issues, regular cleaning and proper chemical balance are crucial for the overall performance of your hot tub heater. Make sure to clean the filters regularly to prevent clogging, as this can impact the efficiency of the heating system. Additionally, maintain appropriate chemical levels in the water to prevent corrosion and mineral buildup in the heater.

While some maintenance tasks can be handled by hot tub owners, certain repairs may require the expertise of a professional hot tub heater technician. If you encounter complex issues, such as electrical problems, leaks, or unusual noises coming from the heater, it is advisable to seek professional hot tub heater repair services. Professionals have the knowledge, experience, and tools to diagnose and fix these issues, ensuring your hot tub heater remains in top-notch condition.

It is al bout the base...yup...and in our world to prepare the base for an above ground pool.

Hello aspiring pool owners! Are you prepared to combat the summer heat in the most stylish manner? You are, for sure! However, you must first organize the base before you cannonball into your above-ground pool. You don't want any unpleasant surprises while you're relaxing in the water, trust us on this. So let's get started with some hot advice for what to install under your above-ground pool so you can enjoy the season in safety and with plenty of splashing around!

And in this article - heck we know people don't wanna read anymore - we will discuss everything you possibly would need to prepare the base for an above ground pool.

It might take some effort, but trust us, you do not want to skimp-a-roo this step.

Determine Your Pool's Base Location

Let's start this base-building party now! Finding the ideal location for your above-ground pool is the first step to doing it right. Make sure the water is flat as a pancake, devoid of rocks or other objects lying about, and receives plenty of sunlight. When you're splashing around, you don't want any unpleasant surprises, we promise.

Now that you've nailed down the spot, it's time to channel your inner rockstar and clear away any stones or other obstacles in the area. You can level out any low spots with some sand, but remember, the thicker and more level the sand layer, the happier your pool will be! It'll be able to handle all that weight of the water without even breaking a sweat.

And last but not least, don't forget to lay a tarp over the area, to keep those pesky stones and sticks at bay. Trust us, you don't want to see your pool in tears because of a puncture wound. So let's keep the base solid and secure, and dive into the fun without a worry in the world!

Clear and level your area

So you've found the perfect spot for your above ground pool and you're ready to dive in!

Next, you'll want to level the ground. Don't worry, you don't need to be a pro at balancing to get it right - just use a long board and level to find any low spots and fill them in with soil or sand. But don't get too carried away with the filling - you need a slight slope away from the pool to avoid a swampy mess.

Now it's time for the cushioning. Unless you're into feeling like you're floating on a bed of rocks, you'll want to add a protective and supportive layer beneath your pool. Foam pads, stone dust, or gravel will do the trick, but make sure to also lay down a barrier like plastic sheeting or landscape fabric to prevent any leaks. Plus, the added cushion will save you from any poolside collisions. Trust us, it's happened to the best of us.

Add Gravel for Support.

Alright, so now that you've got your spot picked out and leveled, it's time to get your pool party started! But before you start filling it up with water and doing your best Marco Polo impression, let's get that base ready.

Forget sand, folks. At least not now....see the next step, That stuff's for castles, not pools. Instead, what you want is a good layer of gravel to give your pool a solid foundation.

You're going to need about 6 inches of it, spread nice and even, so no one steps on a wobbly spot and spills their drink.

After you've laid the gravel, pack it down nice and tight with a shovel or rake. Not only will this keep your pool from shifting or sinking, but it'll also give you a nice, even surface to put your pool on. So skip the sand and stick with the gravel, and you'll be swimming in style all summer long!

We are almost there, hang in....almost only a couple steps left....

Lay Down Sand for Smoothness and Comfort.

Alright, let's give this a shot!

So you've got your spot picked out, leveled the ground, and laid down a layer of gravel. Now it's time to add some sand and give your pool base a little cushioning!

Spread that sand about an inch thick, like a perfect layer of icing on a cake, but without the temptation to lick the spoon. (that would just be gross)

Smooth it out nice and even, just like you do with your bed sheets (or try to, at least). And once you've got your sand layer just right, your pool liner can rest easy, knowing that it's safe from those pesky gravel punctures.

Now, you may be wondering why sand is the preferred material for pool bases. Well, not only does it provide insulation for your liner, but it also helps to even out the ground beneath. Plus, it's a lot more pleasant to walk on than sharp rocks and jagged gravel. So, get ready to make a splash in comfort and style!

Inspect the Surface for Potential Flaws Before Setting Up the Pool Liner and Filling with Water.

Let's get real for a minute, folks: nobody wants a wrinkly pool liner.

So, before you start filling that sucker up with water, give your sand base a good once-over.

Get down and dirty and inspect it for any rogue rocks or dirt that could cause trouble down the line. If you spot any bumps or divots, fill them in with more sand to even things out. We don't want any weird pockets where water can collect and turn into a breeding ground for funky pool bacteria.

Once you're confident that your sand base is smooth and level, it's time to dive in and install your pool liner. Use a leveler to make sure everything is flat and even, so you can avoid any unseemly wrinkles. Trust me, you don't want a lumpy pool any more than you want a lumpy mattress.

And of course, you might be interested next to add some features around your pool. Then check this article out..now...just do it.

Dive...dive...dive

Your above ground pool is ready. You have prepared the base. Your water is nice and clear and clean. Your children have been bugging you for the past few hours...or days... "when can we swim"...and of course no one helped you.

So take that dive brother or sister.

Hopefully you are now ready to prepare the base for an Above Ground Pool.

Related question

Best Base for Installing an Above Ground Pool

When it comes to building a base for your above ground pool, you want to make sure it's as flat and level as possible. The last thing you want is to jump into your pool only to find yourself sloshing around because the base wasn't sturdy enough! To make sure your pool has the proper support, use materials like gravel, sand, or crushed concrete as a base. Keep in mind that building codes can vary depending on where you live, so don't forget to check with your local authorities before you get started. You don't want to get into hot water for not following the rules!

What do you put under an above ground pool?

To make sure your above ground pool stays in good shape for a long time, it's crucial to prepare the ground before installation. First things first, clear the area of any debris, like pesky rocks and annoying roots. Then, lay down a layer of either sand or gravel that has been leveled out to make a smooth and flat base for your pool to rest on. If you're feeling extra fancy, you can also put down some heavy-duty plastic sheeting or landscape fabric to give your pool even more support and protection. And don't forget to double-check that all the electrical and plumbing connections are properly installed before you fill up the pool with water!

The Cheapest way to level ground for an above ground pool

Do it yourself. Getting your above ground pool set up is easier than you think. Start by clearing any large rocks and vegetation from the area. Then, grab a long 2x4 or 2x6 board and use it as a guide to find any high spots that need to be leveled out. You might need to rent a few tools like wet-dry vacs, sanders, shovels, soil rakes, or erosion blankets to make the job easier. But trust me, it's worth it to avoid the hassle and expense of excavation fees.

In this article, we are going to discuss how to transform your backyard into a low-maintenance retreat with an above ground pool.

Above ground pools is a popular and affordable option for many homeowners looking to add a swimming pool to their backyard. But once the excitement of having a pool wears off, many homeowners are left with the task of maintaining it. Keeping an above ground pool in good condition can be a challenge, especially if you don't have the time or budget to invest in expensive upgrades or maintenance. But with a little creativity and some simple DIY skills, you can convert your above ground pool into a low-maintenance retreat that you'll love to spend time in.

However, before we look at some of the ideas, lets us first ask a prominent question:

Is it possible to transform your backyard in a low-maintenance retreat with an above ground pool?

"Yes, it is possible to create a low-maintenance retreat in your backyard with an above ground pool. Consider incorporating landscaping, hardscaping, and outdoor furniture to enhance the area and reduce maintenance. Adding a deck or patio around the pool can also provide a comfortable and functional space to relax and entertain. Incorporating low-maintenance plants or artificial turf can also help reduce the time spent maintaining the area."

We already covered some of these topics on landscaping your pool into an oasis in this article., also if you would rather go custom build, we have some ideas in this article.

With that said, let's look at some ideas:

Here are five simple ideas to help you convert your above ground pool into a low-maintenance retreat:

Add a deck or patio: A deck or patio built around your above ground pool can not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also provide a convenient and low-maintenance way to access the pool. This can be done with a variety of materials such as wood, pavers or stamped concrete, depending on your personal preference and budget. Not only does it add value to your property but also makes it easy to maintain by providing a non-slip surface around the pool.

Install a pool cover: A pool cover can help keep debris out of the pool and reduce the amount of chemicals and water you need to add to keep the pool clean. There are different types of pool covers available, such as manual or automatic covers, solar covers, or winter covers. Each has its own benefits and costs, so it's important to do some research to find the one that best meets your needs and budget. Get your above ground pool cover conveniently delivered to your door, just click here.

Use a robotic pool cleaner: A robotic pool cleaner can help keep your pool clean and clear of debris without you having to do the work yourself. These cleaners are programmed to move around the pool, scrubbing and vacuuming as they go. They can be more expensive than manual cleaners, but they are well worth the investment if you want a low-maintenance pool. At the time of writing, this is the best option available at Amazon.

Incorporate low-maintenance landscaping: Incorporate low-maintenance landscaping around your pool area. This can include things like planting drought-resistant plants, adding rock or gravel beds, or incorporating a water feature. This not only adds visual appeal but also reduces the amount of upkeep required for the area.

Install a saltwater chlorination system: Traditional chlorine systems require regular maintenance and monitoring, but a saltwater chlorination system is a more low-maintenance option. Saltwater chlorination systems convert salt into chlorine, eliminating the need to add chlorine to the pool manually. These systems also tend to be easier on your skin and eyes and can be a more cost-effective option over time. We covered installing your own saltwater system for an above ground pool in this article.

On a personal note, I have found that the most important aspect and your minimum purchase should be a pool cover. It does make a massive difference in aesthetics, maintaining the water quality, and also provides an effective barrier keeping your kids safe. (More on the latter is covered here)

It's also important to mention that implementing these ideas won't only make your life easier but also will increase the value of your property. A low-maintenance pool is more desirable to many home buyers, and these simple changes can make a big difference.

In conclusion, maintaining an above ground pool can be a challenging task, but with a little creativity and some simple DIY skills, you can convert your above ground pool into a low-maintenance retreat. Add a deck or patio, install a pool cover, use a robotic pool cleaner, incorporate low-maintenance landscaping, and install a saltwater chlorination system are all ways to make your pool a more enjoyable and low-maintenance space. Not only can these changes make your pool area more inviting and save you time and money in the long run, but they can also increase the value of your property. So, take a look at your above ground pool and see how you can make it a more low-maintenance, relaxing and enjoyable space for you and your family to enjoy.

In this article, we will look at alternative, funky and new things you can do with your above ground or small compact small pool. One of the many DIY projects in this industry is to landscape your above ground pool into a backyard oasis.

With this in mind let’s answer the one burning question first. It is straight and simple. Can you in fact landscape an above ground pool or small compact pool into a magical backyard oasis?

In general, you can turn your above ground pool into any type of creative construction that you can think of. Small pool landscaping can turn your backyard into a private oasis, providing a beautiful and relaxing space for you and your family to enjoy. Whether you have a small above-ground pool or a compact in-ground pool, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your space and create a backyard oasis that you'll love.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, it is time to start looking at some ideas on how to actually do this.

We already covered some of the best things that can go around your above ground pool in this article. Check it out for some more ideas.

Add plants and greenery to your above ground pool landscaping

One way to add a touch of luxury to your small pool area is to incorporate plants and greenery. Not only do plants add a natural and calming element to your backyard, but they can also provide privacy and shade.

Consider adding tall shrubs or trees along the perimeter of your yard to create a secluded and intimate space.

You can also add potted plants and hanging baskets around your pool to add pops of color and texture.

Personal Experience: It might be super obvious, but important to note. If you have kids then it is better to add your greenery in pots. The simple reason is splashing around, playing with balls or just playing in general will put any planted greenery in danger, ultimately costing you too much money. Another alternative is talking to your local nursery and finding robust plants.

To get great deals at the time of writing for outdoor pots, head over here:

It is all about the seating, a landscape winner!

Another way to make the most of your small pool area is to add comfortable seating. This will allow you and your family to relax and enjoy the space. Choose seating that is waterproof and durable, such as outdoor wicker or teak furniture. Here are some products you can consider.

You can also add cushions and throw pillows for added comfort. Consider incorporating a small table and chairs for dining al fresco, or a lounger for soaking up the sun.

Personal Experience: For comfortable seating, your surrounding pool area obviously needs to be level. Because my backyard was at a slope, we leveled the area to only level the above ground pool. And yes we only decided to landscape afterward which I did not have the budget to do yet. So we are in the process of creating a small decking area around our pool.

Other Not-So Crazy above ground pool landscaping ideas.

In addition to seating, consider adding other amenities to your small pool area. A fire pit or outdoor fireplace can provide warmth on cool evenings, and also create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Not to mention doing a good old barbeque while the family is enjoying the water. You do get hungry when swimming!

You can also add outdoor lighting, such as string lights or lanterns, to create a magical ambiance at night.

Personal Experience: I have not added a fireplace to my area, for the same reasons as mentioned with the seating. That said we have added some lanterns - solar to be specific as to not have a fire hazard - and also, once our deck is up (photos to follow) I believe this to be such a great idea.

If you are in the market to find some fire pits then click here.

For some great lanterns and outdoor lights this is the place you should check out. There are great waterproof (a must) and also solar options. So this is a good old win-win.

Final thoughts

Don't forget about the small details. Adding small touches, such as candles, throw blankets, and decorative accessories, can make your small pool area feel like a true oasis. You can also add a water feature, such as a small fountain or waterfall, to add the soothing sound of water to your backyard retreat.

With a little imagination and creativity, you can turn your small pool area into a private oasis that you and your family will love. By incorporating plants, comfortable seating, and thoughtful details, you can create a backyard space that is truly your own. So why not start planning your small pool landscaping project today and start enjoying your own private oasis in no time.

Whoever said that a small pool or above ground pool is boring?

You can jazz it up with these landscape your above ground pool ideas.

In full transparency, I have not personally transformed my above ground pool into a hot tub yet, but I have prepared for this article by scouring the web as well as chat to my local pool shop about the possibility thereof.

And the results are in.

(as a side note this will be a winter project from me some time so we should update this article later)

So in the winter months, many of us are looking for ways to warm up. In this article, we'll show you how to turn your old above-ground pool into an amazing hot tub. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to get a spa or hot tub in your backyard and by following our instructions, it can be done yourself!

But is that even possible? Can you actually turn a temporary above ground pool into a fun hot tub?

In general, you can turn any above ground pool into a hot tub or spa setup. The process is quite simple and can be done as a DIY project. All you would need is an above ground pool with a liner in great condition and a water heating system.

Now that we know it is possible, in theory at least, let's start investigating further. However, before we get to all the steps...

(That said, if the below steps feel like to much work, then juts go and buy yourself an inflatable hot tub. Look at our Coleman SaluSpa Inlftalable Hot Tub here. )

But what is an above ground pool?

I get it, most of you on this site know this answer, but this search term is not 100% pool-related like the rest of the content on this website.

So for those who are literally only interested in having fun in a hot tub, then read on. The rest can skip to the next heading...

An above ground pool is a type of pool that is constructed on top of the ground and usually has a protective cage or wall around it. Above-ground pools cannot be constructed semi-permanently or permanently in many areas because they might pose a safety risk for children and animals.

But that does not mean you can't have one for a few seasons -- in fact, it can actually be a cost-saving alternative to building an expensive permanent installation. And the best part is that when your pool season ends, tearing down your above ground pool really isn't much more difficult than setting it up!

Or, if your pool gets old, or if you want some warmer water, or if the kids left the house...

then

yes, you can turn it into a hot tub.

Before we start the process, let's just look at one more crucial element.

What would be the best size above ground pool to turn into a hot tub?

In all fairness, above ground pools would struggle to keep their warmth for a longer duration. So, in general, the smaller the size of the pool the better your hot tub experience would be. Aim for 12 feet by 30 inches size and you should be good to go.

Good, so how do you turn that above ground pool into a hot tub?

The process of converting an above ground pool into a hot tub is not difficult, but you'll need to follow some steps.

Step 1 - Empty your pool

First and foremost, the pool must be empty before you can begin your project!

Duh...

To drain your exiting above ground pool, simply open the release valve at the bottom of your pool liner. Note it is somewhat elevated above the lowes water line, so once it has drained below the valve, you will need to pump the rest out, or take the structure down to get rid of the rest of the water.

Step 2 - Add seats

What is a hot tub without seats?

A bath.

So add yourself some seats.

Go for plastic benches if you can get some and make sure they are of course heavier than water so they don't end up floating at the top

Step 3 - Add new liner...if needed

This step is only applicable if your current above ground pool is old and worn.

If so, measure the inside diameter of your pool so that you know how much liner material you will need.

Locate a source for used liner material if you prefer to avoid new materials. There are many resources online where people sell off their old liners after they move away or upgrade their existing pools. This way, you can find solid deals on high-quality liners!

Step 4 - Add the heating system

Since your above ground pool is already fitted by outflow and inflow nozzles for your pool pump, connecting a water heating system to these is pretty straightforward.

Ensure that you use the correct pipe diameter and you should be good to go.

Check out some of these awesome specials on Amazon and get your system today.

Step 5 - Add the water baby...

What do you call a hot tub without water?

A disappointment.

So add water, turn on the system and start relaxing in your brand new cost-effective hot tub!

Bonus Step

Consider raising the floor of your pool a few inches with dirt to allow for easier movement around the pool perimeter.

You can also line the bottom of your hot tub with a layer of concrete before you install your liner so that it is sturdier than if you had just poured cement into an empty space.

Why would you convert your above ground pool into a hot tub?

The benefits of turning your old pool into a spa or hot tub are that it is relatively affordable and less time-consuming than building a custom installation.

You also do not have to worry about installing pipes to bring water in and out, since your pool already has in and outflow nozzles.

There are few things better than floating in a warm bubble bath on a chilly night!

What will it cost to convert your above ground pool into a hot tub?

In general, it will depend on you buying new - your above ground pool at least - and if you are going to use an older pool

So for full transparency and easy reference, let's assume that you will be buying everything, here would be the cost.

Item Needed to covert above ground pool into a hot tub

Cost of Item

Above ground pool 12 feet by 30 inches

$170.00

Plastic Benches x 4

$120.00

Water heating system

$277.00

Total

$567.00

Click on any of the items for sale at Amazon

Conclusion

If you're looking for a way to get a spa or hot tub in your backyard without spending all of the money, then converting an old above-ground pool into one is one of the most cost-effective and less time-consuming ways.

As we mentioned in the article, the process isn't difficult, but it does require some necessary steps:

Empty your pool

Add some seats

Fix the liner if needed

Add the water warming system

Fill your pool up again

That is it. Now go and test it out and let us know how it goes.

In this article, we will examine why you should consider a saltwater pool, the steps to convert your above ground pool into a saltwater pool, the benefits and obstacles thereof.

Yes, it is a mouthful, so let's get started.

Why consider an above ground saltwater pool?

Saltwater pools are becoming more and more popular.

They are environmentally friendly, safe for everyone to swim in, and they can help you save money on maintenance costs!

If you're considering converting or starting an above ground saltwater pool but don't know all the benefits of it, then we hopefully have all the answers for you.

First off, let's look at the standard Chlorine Pools.

*Chlorine: Chlorine has been used since 1894 when it was first discovered by German chemist Dr. Carl Lindner during his experiments with hydrochloric acid and chlorine gas which was a by-product of a chemical manufacturing process.

The usage of chlorine has been increased since then as it is considered to be the most effective sanitizer for swimming pools and water treatment plants.

Chlorine is used to treat drinking water, wastewater, and swimming pools because it does not leave any harmful residue behind after reacting with contaminants in the pool.

In fact, when combined with other chemicals such as cyanuric acid or iodine, chlorine becomes even more powerful at eradicating bacteria and algae from your pool water.

Although it remains an effective way to keep your pool clean, there are some drawbacks that come with using chlorine:

It can cause serious eye irritation if you get too close to the water.

It leaves behind harmful residue on your skin and hair which can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Chlorine can be harmful if inhaled and can even lead to death if swallowed.

In contrast, saltwater pools combine the benefits of saltwater and chlorine into one powerful combination!

Of course, they don't contain any chlorine at all so you won't have to worry about any of the side effects of chlorine listed above.

They are also very environmentally friendly which is a good option for families who have younger children because they don't pose any health risks to the swimmers or those handling them. Saltwater pools will sanitize and purify your pool using algae, anaerobic bacteria, and sunlight instead of harmful chemicals.

To Summarise the benefits of saltwater above ground pool system.

Saltwater pools are environmentally friendly

They don't contain any chlorine at all so you won't have to worry about any of the side effects of chlorine listed above

Saltwater pools will sanitize and purify your pool using algae, anaerobic bacteria, and sunlight instead of harmful chemicals

It is far more cost-effective than using chemicals

Salt Water Pools: How Do They Work?

The saltwater system in saltwater pools is designed to maintain the right amount of salt at all times in order to keep the mixture balanced and prevent corrosive elements from building up over time.

This is achieved by turning the chemical compound of your pool (check out steps later in this article) to a salt base and then adding a saltwater chlorinator system.

Most saltwater pools need to be refilled with around 200 pounds of salt every 6 months. This should balance out the amount of chlorine that is used on a regular basis in order to keep your pool clean and clear.

With above ground pools, these numbers should be adjusted based on water volume. Chat to your local pool company for guidance.

Tip: Most pool owners prefer to use rainwater for cleaning pools because it offers an eco-friendly method of maintaining the salt levels in your pool without using any harmful chemicals or consuming large amounts of water from a local supply.

The negatives of a saltwater above ground pool

It is al great and wonderful that you want to convert your existing chlorine pool into a saltwater system.

But unfortunately, this can come at a cost.

See, salt is not meant to mix with metal. So, if your existing above ground pool is made out of metal then depending on the rust protection of the pool, the salt will start eroding the metal.

In short, this can greatly reduce the number of years your above ground pool will last.

(We discussed how long in general above ground pools last in this article Above Ground Pools Last Longer Than You Think - so click the link if you want to have a definite answer.

The best types of above ground pools to consider for a saltwater conversion are pools with a plastic or aluminum structure.

Steps to convert your above ground pool to a saltwater system

Okay so now we looked at all the pros and cons of a saltwater system for your above ground pool. Let's dig into how you go about doing it.

Word of caution if you are not a DIY type of person, then perhaps ask your local pool shop for assistance. Otherwise without further ado here is the steps in converting your above ground pool into a saltwater system"

Step 1 - Test existing pool water chemical balance

Even if you decide to drain your pool and fill it up again, the chemical levels in your above ground pool needs to be tested and balanced where necessary. .

Contact a pool professional or use a home kit available on Amazon

(all products available at Amazon - see Product resources at the bottom of this article)

The following is the list of items chemicals needed to be tested for your above ground pool or any pool for that matter before you do a saltwater conversion. Also included in the table is what the optimum range is and also the chemicals or method needed to balance the chemicals

Chemical

Optimum Range

How to Ballance

Alkalinity

80-120 ppm

If too Low - substitute with sodium bicarbonate
If to High - Muriatic Accid

pH

Between 7.2 -7.6

If to Low - Use a pH increaser
If to High - Muriatic Accid

Free Chlorine

1-3 ppm

If to Low - Ad Rapid Pool Shock
If to High - Drain 2-3 inches and add fresh water

Cyanuric Acid

50-80 ppm

If to Low - Ad Pool Stabilizer
If to High - Drain 2-3 inches and add fresh water

Calcium Hardness

200-400 ppm

If to Low - Ad Calcium Hardness
If to High - Drain 2-3 inches and add fresh water

Metals*

None

Use metal control to lower metals in your pool

Metals* - There should be no metals in the water. Metals can cause staining of the pool surface.

Note: An existing pool may have salt levels if liquid chlorine has been used.

Step 2 - Add Salt to Your Above Ground Pool

Once the water balance of your pool is correct you can add salt. The average salt level should be 2700 to 3500 ppm. Most Important: Only use sodium chloride that is greater than 99% pure.

Do not use:

Rock Salt

Yellow Prussiate of Soda

Salt with anti-caking additives

Iodised salt

Step 3 - Install the chlorinator system

Once the first two steps are completed, install and then turn on your saltwater chlorinator system.

Your what?

Yes, in order o permanently change your pool to a saltwater pool you would need a chlorinator system.

In short, the salty water you have just created in step 2, will go into the chlorinator, from where it will produce chlorinated water, going back into your pool.

The chlorinated water does its work in the pool then combines again with sodium chloride and becomes salt again and that water goes back into the chlorinator system, completing the loop.

It goes without saying that you would need a pool pump in order to pump the water into the system and out again. This video explains the process in more detail:

You can purchase a simple install system from Intex here. Further, watch this video for more information.

And that is the process of changing your pool into saltwater.

If you are unsure of any of the steps, contact your local pool shop for assistance.

Related Questions

How regularly should I add Salt to my above ground saltwater pool?

In general, there is no timeframe when you need to add salt to your above ground pool. The only time when new salt is needed is when your pool gets diluted by either rain or draining your pool and adding fresh water. Should you add new salt, ensure you measure your water to determine the exact amount of new salt needed.

How long does a chlorinator system last for an above ground pool?

There are two components to the chlorinator system that can influence the lifespan of the generator. Firstly, there is the Cell, and secondly the control board. The cell typically can last between 3 to 7 years for your above ground pool. The lifespan of the cell is dependant on how often it is cleaned as well as the chemical level that gets too high. As for the control board, since it is in essence a circuit board there is not a definitive lifespan, although it should last you at least 5 years on average.

How long should I run my above ground saltwater system?

Since the pool pump is required for the chlorinator system, the length of time running your saltwater system depends on the manufacturer's recommendation of running the above ground pool pump. In general, for above ground pools this is normally around 4 hours a day.

Key Takeaways

If you are considering transforming your current above ground pool into a saltwater pool here are the key takeaways

Clearly identify the reasons you want to do this.

Establish if your above ground pool is able to handle a saltwater system

Caluclated the investiment needed for

The chemical tests and possble corrective measures

The Chlorinator system

Determine if this will be a DIY prosess or if you are going at it yourself

That is basically it. To conclude this is one of those topics dependant on your own preference.

Above ground pools have been around for decades. They're a great option for people who don't want the hassle of maintaining an in-ground pool but still enjoy swimming and playing in the water. That said, it might look bland in comparison to their inground cousins.

So, what are the best things to put around an above ground pool? In general, it depends on area size, pool size, and budget. Next, it will depend on whether the pool owner wants security and privacy, landscaping, or fun elements. Of course, these can be a combination.

Landscaping Ideas around your above ground pool

Adding landscaping around your above ground pool can make it look like you spent thousands on a professional installation. Here are some ideas you can try:

Concrete or Pavers -

The first step is deciding if you want a concrete or paver deck surrounding the pool. Concrete is more affordable but requires more maintenance than pavers.

Pavers are beautiful and require no upkeep, but they also cost significantly more money upfront than concrete decks do.

Gravel or Rock

Add gravel or rock around your pool. This will help keep debris from floating into your pool while also making sure that the water stays clean and clear all summer long. Plus, it looks great too!

Wooden deck

Above ground pool owners often find that they have a hard time finding attractive and affordable landscaping ideas around their above ground swimming pools. And if none of the above floats your proverbial boat then why not consider a wooden deck.

This will not only increase the value of your home, but also provide you with a place to relax by the water's edge.

Bonus idea: if budget and space allow it, add an Hawaiian-style beach bar for some extra fun...now we are talking.

Fun things to add around your pool

Most probably not always the most practical, but it will enhance your swimming pleasure.

Install an outdoor heater to extend your swimming season

An outdoor heater can help keep your above ground pool from freezing by raising its temperature to about 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 Celsius). This allows you to swim year round without having to drain or cover your pool each fall and spring. A heated swimming pool also saves on water use because you don't need to add chemicals as often during colder months since there aren't any algae growing in it! And with a heat pump system installed under our deck we're able to enjoy our own private oasis all year long at a fraction of what we would have spent building

Solar lights around the perimeter of the pool so it's easy to see at night

Solar lights around the perimeter of the pool so it's easy to see at night. This is an easy DIY project that doesn't require any special skills or tools (other than a drill). The solar powered LED lights are waterproof and can be mounted anywhere along the edge of your above ground swimming pool for extra safety and security when you're in or near the water after dark. Best of all, these solar-powered LED lights will stay lit up for 8 hours once fully charged during daylight hours without running up additional electricity costs!

Conclusion

A pool should be surrounded by the right things for your needs. The best thing to put around a pool is something that will make it work and look good for you and your family's budget.
